Retina Vision

This is a blog on the information I feel to be relevant to the public/ health care providers and retinal patients with regards to eye care/ health esp where the retina is concerned.

Effect of Lutein on Retinal Neurons and Oxidative Stress in a Model of Acute Retinal Ischemia/Reperfusion

Invest. Ophthalmol. Vis. Sci.vol. 50 no. 2 836-843

Lutein is more than a treatment for AMD?

"The neuroprotective effect of lutein was associated with reduced oxidative stress. Lutein has been hitherto used principally for protection of outer retinal elements in AMD. Our study suggests that it may also be relevant for the protection of inner retina from acute ischemic damage"

This is interesting. A personal opinion. If lutein has such great neuroprotective effects on conditions involving ischaemia, it will obviously be of benefit in conditions such as BRVO's, CRVO's, Diabetic Retinopathy and even in RRD's where ischaemia is what robs the detached retinas of recovery potential. Food for thought. Btw the image below is that of  "Keiji" or Wolfberry- reportedly one of the highest concentrations of Lutein....I have it in my cereal daily.
